How to Back Up Your Own Instagram Content: Official Export and Public Archiving
Updated: 2026-10-28 · 6 min read
Many creators and businesses treat Instagram as a portfolio, but accounts can be hacked or wrongly suspended and posts can be deleted by mistake. Work that exists only on the platform is not safe. This guide covers two ways to back up your own content, the official export and archiving of public content, what each can and cannot do, and how to combine them.
Why back up
- Account risk: a hijacked, suspended or locked-out account can make your work unreachable overnight.
- Content risk: accidental deletion or platform changes can make old posts unavailable.
- You often do not hold the originals: many people shoot on a phone and publish directly, so the platform copy becomes the only one.
- Reuse: building a portfolio or a year-in-review needs an organized archive.
Route one: the official “Download your information”
Instagram offers “Download your information” in the account settings (it may sit under Accounts Center). You can request an export of your posts, Stories, Reels and account data, and the platform notifies you when an archive is ready to download. It is the most complete way to back up your own account, private accounts and archived content included. The drawbacks: you wait for the platform to prepare it, files follow the platform’s layout, nothing is organized by theme and it does not update itself.
Route two: archive your public posts with Meecut
If your account is public you can add it under Following. Meecut checks it periodically, saves new posts and Stories, files them by person and can sync them to your own Google Drive. Its strengths are that it is continuous and automatic and that Stories are saved before their 24 hours run out. Its limit is that it can only reach public content, so it does not work for private accounts.
Combining the two
- Every quarter or half year: make a full backup with the official export and keep it on a local drive.
- In between: track your public account with Meecut and turn on Google Drive sync so new content leaves a copy in the cloud.
- Important work: keep the original files before publishing in a “published” folder instead of relying on the platform version.
Mistakes to avoid
- Keeping only one copy: keep at least two in different places.
- Leaving everything on the platform: neither Instagram nor any third-party service is an archive.
- No naming rule: see the organizing and archiving guide.
- Ignoring privacy: backups may contain messages or other people’s information and need to be stored carefully.
If you want to back up someone else’s account
Meecut only handles public content and only for personal organizing. The copyright in other people’s work belongs to them; follow copyright and fair use for what you do with it afterwards.
Add your public account under Following and new posts are saved automatically. Open Meecut →
