Public vs. Private Instagram Accounts: What It Means for Saving and Tracking
Updated: 2026-10-28 · 5 min read
The most common reason a save fails is simply “this account is private.” Knowing the difference between public and private tells you, before you paste a link, whether it can work at all, and explains why some content can never be read. This guide covers how the two account types differ, how that affects saving and tracking in Meecut, and what to do when you hit a private account.
What public and private accounts are
The posts, Reels and profile of a public account can be opened by anyone with the link, even without an Instagram login. A private account limits its content to approved followers: everyone else sees only the profile picture, the bio and the post count, and tapping a post shows “This account is private.” The owner can switch between public and private at any time, so an account you could save yesterday may be closed tomorrow.
Who can see what
- Public account: everyone, including logged-out visitors and search engines.
- Private account: only followers the owner has approved. Everyone else, logged-out visitors included, sees no posts.
- Stories of a public account: visible to everyone by default but kept for only 24 hours; some accounts also restrict stories to “Close Friends,” which cannot be read either.
How the difference affects saving and tracking
Meecut only handles public content. For a public account you can paste a post or Reel link to save a single item, or add the account under Following so it is checked every 6 hours by default and new posts are saved automatically. For a private account neither route returns any content: the link cannot be read and tracking brings in no new posts. This is not a temporary glitch but a deliberate boundary. Meecut does not log in to Instagram and never uses your account, or anyone else’s, to read private content.
Why private content should not be saved
The owner of a private account chose to share only with a limited audience. Saving that content and passing it on goes around the limit they set, which can violate their privacy as well as platform rules and local law. Even if you are an approved follower, the content was shared with you personally, not published for everyone. So anything that needs a login or an approved follow to view is something Meecut does not handle, and it offers no way around that.
How to tell whether an account is private
- Open the profile: a private account shows a “This account is private” notice.
- Open the link in a logged-out browser window: if you cannot see the post, the account is private or the post was deleted.
- Tell “private” from “deleted”: a private account’s profile is still there with its posts hidden; a deleted post shows a “page not available” message.
- Remember accounts can switch at any time: content you already saved is unaffected, but posts made after an account goes private cannot be fetched.
If you want to back up your own private account
Instagram has a “Download your information” option in the account settings that exports what you have posted, along with your data, as an archive. That is the most reliable way to back up your own private account. Meecut is built for saving and tracking public content, not for exporting your own private account.
If a creator switches from public to private
- Items already in your library are not deleted and stay available for as long as your plan keeps them; if Google Drive is connected they also remain in your Drive.
- New content posted afterwards cannot be fetched.
- This is the creator’s choice. Please respect it rather than trying to get around it with another tool.
